The Old Testament
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that you may live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving to you. Exodus 20:12, NET©
The Old Testament says we should honor our parents. It could mean that you would not be disobedient to them. But also be kind to them and take care of them when they get old. It’s blessed by God to honor your parents.
In the New Testament
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord. Colossians 3:20, NET©
Even in the new testament, we find verses in the Bible that say the same thing. That it is the will of God, that children should submit to their parents and honor them.
Family Relationships – Ephesians 6:1-4
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely,
3 “that it may go well with you and that you will live a long time on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Since God created us to live and to start families, it is the will of God, that we should have good relationships with one another. This is reflected in that the children are supposed to submit to their parents, and later in life when they can not take care of themselves, support them.
According to Eph 6:1, it is obvious, that it is in the Lord, that the children should submit to their parents. Thus, obey the parents always, except if it is not obvious, that what they demand is wrong.
Parents are also encouraged to raise and foster the children in the instruction of the Lord, so that they can grow up, and become secure and confident individuals. It’s important that parents do not mistreat their children or provoke them, but love them.
Do You Honor Your Parents?
If you are living in such a way that you do not care about your parents or insult them, then you live in sin and need to repent. In the sense that the parents have hurt you, you need to forgive them in Jesus name.
