Second Commandment

The Old Testament

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me, 6 and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:4-6, NET©

During the time of the old testament, nobody was allowed to setup idols such as statues or similar to worship.

In the New Testament

Another way to carve out idols for oneself, is to adapt a gospel customization accord to your own likings, or a “another Jesus” that suits your own taste and cravings. The bible commands us to receive the gospel and Jesus the way it is.

3 For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things. 4 And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4, NET©

People with idols in their hearts tend to dislike the truth, and gather teachers and ministers who preach only their own favorite passages from the bible, that they like themselves. Such as are consistent with the idols of their hearts.

3 But I am afraid that just as the serpent deceived Eve by his treachery, your minds may be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus different from the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the one you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it well enough! 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, NET©

It’s easy to be led astray from the true faith and the true gospel, just to satisfy the selfish hidden lusts of the heart. Therefore, heresies and false teachers arise, that leads the multitudes astray. When you choose only the pieces that you like in the bible, and only listen to the parts of Jesus’ teachings that suit your own agenda, you are being led away from God.

8 But even if we (or an angel from heaven) should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be condemned to hell! 9 As we have said before, and now I say again, if any one is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let him be condemned to hell! Galatians 1:8-9, NET©

Anyone preaching another gospel and carving out a false image of Jesus other than the one contained in the scripture of God is accursed.

Have You Made a False Image?

22 Who is the liar but the person who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the antichrist: the person who denies the Father and the Son. 1 John 2:22, NET©

Have you made an idol of your own image of Jesus? I am not saying you can not have a painting, porcelain figure or any other artistic object that is an artistic work of Jesus. But if you have created your own interpretation of who Jesus is, compared to the biblical Jesus, and made your own way of salvation. Then you deny God, the Father and the Son. You need to repent of your heresy, confess it as a sin and come back to obedience to the word of God.
